“He is not well suited for the competitiveness of the Premier League maybe he might do well in Ligue 1 or some other low level league but not in the Premier League. Ratcliffe should enforce his exit next transfer window so there’s more focus on actual good players” – This is according to Football legend Michael Owen as he asserts that a Manchester United player “isn’t suited to the Premier League.”
Michael Owen has raised concerns about Manchester United winger Antony’s potential to succeed in the Premier League, despite acknowledging the Brazilian’s natural talent.
Antony, who joined United from Ajax for £85 million over two years ago at the suggestion of Erik ten Hag, has struggled to meet the high expectations placed on him. While he netted his first goal of the season during United’s 7-0 win over Barnsley in the EFL Cup last week, his involvement in league action this season has been minimal, with just one minute played so far.
Ten Hag has emphasized that the 24-year-old needs to “earn his place” in the squad, but Owen is doubtful that Antony will ever justify the hefty price tag.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk, the former striker said, “I haven’t seen enough from Antony since his arrival to justify him starting regularly for Manchester United. He’s clearly a talented player, and with the substantial investment made, the club is eager to see him succeed and get into form.”
Owen continued, “However, I don’t think his style of play suits the Premier League. He lacks the pace necessary to beat defenders, and when he attempts tricks, he doesn’t have the acceleration to follow through.”
There was speculation about a possible loan move for Antony before the summer transfer window closed, but the winger chose to remain at Old Trafford and fight for his place. Despite this, Owen feels a move elsewhere might benefit Antony and help him rediscover the form that saw him shine at Ajax.
“He might thrive in a different environment,” Owen added. “In the current Manchester United setup, it’s difficult for anyone to stand out, as we’ve seen with several new signings in the last few years.”
“If he were to start in the next match, I wouldn’t be particularly excited. I think I’ve seen enough to suggest that he’ll find it tough, but perhaps a change in management or a move to another team could help reignite his performances. That’s something to consider in the future.”
Currently sitting 11th in the Premier League after five games, Manchester United are set to face FC Twente in the Europa League on Wednesday, followed by a home fixture against Tottenham next weekend.
