Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit labels Bruno Fernandes a ‘diva’ and names the shock Man Utd player who should replace him as captain
Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit has not held back in his criticism of Bruno Fernandes as Manchester United’s captain and has even suggested an unexpected alternative for the leadership role.
Fernandes, who joined United from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 for an initial fee of £47 million, has made a significant impact with 79 goals in 237 games and has won the FA Cup and EFL Cup under manager Erik ten Hag. Regarded as one of United’s key acquisitions since Sir Alex Ferguson’s era, Fernandes was appointed captain last summer after Harry Maguire was relieved of the role. Recently, he extended his contract with the club, keeping him at Old Trafford until 2027.
Petit, a former Arsenal midfielder known for his Premier League and FA Cup victories with Arsenal, as well as World Cup and European Championship triumphs with France, offered his opinion on Fernandes. While he acknowledged the Portuguese star as a ‘very good’ player, Petit criticized his behavior on the field, particularly how he reacts to unfavorable situations. In an interview with talkSPORT, Petit labeled Fernandes as a ‘diva.’ “Sometimes, I feel like he acts like a diva. Even though he’s the captain, if I were his teammate, his constant complaining and gesturing would frustrate me. That’s not the attitude you expect from a leader,” Petit stated.
He continued, “Fernandes is talented. I was especially impressed with his performances during the Covid-19 season when there were no crowds; he was outstanding. However, since his contract extension and watching him play for Portugal, his attitude on the field has become increasingly annoying.”
“I get the urge to jump into the TV and challenge him directly as an opponent,” Petit joked.
When questioned on who he believes would be a better fit for Manchester United’s captaincy, Petit mentioned Kobbie Mainoo as a possible future option. Although he praised Mainoo’s talent and leadership qualities, he pointed out that his young age makes him unready for the role at present. “The standout players this season have been the younger ones. I think Mainoo has the potential and character to be captain, but right now, he’s too young,” Petit concluded.
