“This isn’t for you. You can’t survive in the Premier League like this. You should move another before your career suffers. You are not good enough for such a prestigious Club”– This is according to Former Manchester United goalkeeper and legend Peter Schemeichel as he returns to Old Trafford with harsh advice for the current Manchester United Goal keeper Andre Onana.

Andre Onana has been urged to consider leaving Manchester United if he finds the pressures of his role overwhelming.

After his move from Inter Milan to Manchester United last summer, with a transfer fee initially set at £43.8 million, plus an additional £3.4 million in potential add-ons, Onana faced a challenging first season. The Cameroonian goalkeeper struggled with several high-profile mistakes, conceding 83 goals across all competitions, and securing only 13 clean sheets in 51 matches.

As the 2024/25 season kicks off, Onana remains under intense scrutiny. This pressure is heightened by United’s significant investment in defense, particularly with the acquisitions of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich.

Previously, Peter Schmeichel, a legendary former United goalkeeper, suggested that Onana’s errors stemmed from his struggle to handle the pressure associated with the role.

Now, Anders Lindegaard, another former United goalkeeper, has shared his perspective after playing in a legends match against Celtic at Old Trafford. Lindegaard, who was with Manchester United from 2010 to 2015, working closely with David de Gea during his time, emphasized what he sees as Onana’s primary challenge.

Lindegaard remarked, “Onana has shown improvement after a difficult start and is performing better now. However, there’s no magic solution to dealing with the pressure—it’s an inherent part of the job. If you’re unable or unwilling to handle it, then perhaps this isn’t the right place for you.”

These comments come after Tim Howard, another former United goalkeeper, questioned Onana’s approach to taking more risks this season. Speaking to NBC Sports, Howard expressed concern, stating, “He can’t afford too many errors. Some of the goals he conceded were definitely saveable. While the idea of taking more risks is interesting, I wasn’t convinced last season, and he still has much to prove. He has incredible talent, but he hasn’t fully showcased it yet, and too many goals are slipping through that should be saved.”

Schmeichel has also highlighted the lack of a consistent defense in front of Onana as a contributing factor to his struggles. Last season, United’s manager Erik ten Hag had to contend with injuries to key defenders such as Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Raphael Varane, and Harry Maguire, which affected the team’s defensive stability.

With De Ligt, Martinez, and Maguire now back to fitness, greater consistency is expected this season. Schmeichel recently noted, “I saw considerable improvement in various aspects of his game as the season progressed. Like any goalkeeper, he needs a solid defense in front of him. If he gets that, I’m confident we’ll see a world-class goalkeeper who can perform at the highest level.”
