Two more players are expected to be excluded from England’s final 26-man squad for Euro 2024.
Before the tournament this summer, Gareth Southgate initially selected a provisional 33-man squad, out of which seven players will be dropped before the final announcement.
On Wednesday night, it was confirmed that Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison will not be part of the Three Lions squad this summer, after much speculation about his inclusion.
The 27-year-old participated in England’s 3-0 friendly victory over Bosnia and played in 28 Premier League matches last season under manager Ange Postecoglou. Despite this, Maddison will not be traveling to Germany with the final team.
Maddison was included in the Qatar 2022 World Cup squad but did not get any playing time during the tournament.
Reports indicate that Curtis Jones will also be among the players left out. Gareth Southgate has already informed Jones, who featured in 36 matches across all competitions for Liverpool last season, that he will not be part of the summer squad.
Additionally, the Daily Mail reports that Liverpool teammate Jarell Quansah is “likely” to miss out as well.
The 25-year-old Quansah, who has emerged as one of the top full-backs at Liverpool, has impressed Southgate. Southgate expressed his satisfaction after the Bosnia match, stating, “We were really thrilled. Since I first discussed the position with him about a year ago, he has been eager to learn and is still finding it. Additionally, what we have witnessed over the previous 30 minutes is a significant option for us.”
Southgate also remarked, “We will have various difficulties in this tournament, and we will have to have different methods of handling problems that teams offer to us.”
