Manchester United have been urged to reconsider their interest in Brentford’s star forward, Ivan Toney, despite earlier links to several top Premier League clubs.

The England international was anticipated to be a prime target in the summer transfer market, but so far, no major club, including Manchester United, has made a concrete bid.

Toney had been frequently mentioned in connection with clubs like Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United. However, Tottenham chose to sign Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke, while Arsenal and Chelsea have yet to express any serious interest in Toney, casting doubt on his suitability for these top-tier teams.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has expressed concerns about Toney’s fit at Old Trafford. Ferdinand questioned whether the 28-year-old striker aligns with United’s current approach and long-term objectives.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Ferdinand said, “Personally, I wouldn’t go after someone like Ivan Toney. His age and profile don’t seem to match what the club needs.

It doesn’t seem like a good fit to me. He was a player everyone thought might move to Arsenal or Chelsea for £100m or £80m, but now there are no offers. I’m confused by this. For Manchester United, I just don’t see it working.”

Toney had an impressive 2022-23 Premier League campaign, finishing as the third-highest scorer with 20 goals in 33 appearances, trailing only Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.

Manchester United have already strengthened their attack this summer with the signing of Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee, adding to their current roster that includes Rasmus Hojlund.
