According to reports in the Spanish media, Manchester United have agreed to sign Miguel Gutierrez, who currently plays for Girona, for a reported fee of £30 million. The youngster will sign a five-year contract with United in the coming days as a replacement for injury-prone Luke Shaw.
Spanish media has confirmed that Manchester United have successfully signed Miguel Gutierrez from Girona. The 22-year-old left-back was part of Real Madrid’s squad that claimed both La Liga and the Champions League titles two years ago.
Despite his past with Real Madrid, Gutierrez has truly made his mark at Girona, especially in the last two seasons under the guidance of manager Michel.
Currently, Gutierrez is under contract with Girona until 2027, earning around £280,000 per year. According to Cadena Ser, Real Madrid retained a buy-back clause in his contract, allowing them to repurchase him for just 8 million euros this summer.
The Express reports that Real Madrid intends to exercise this buy-back option and has already negotiated a deal to sell Gutierrez to Manchester United for £34 million. Manchester United is reportedly pursuing this transfer as they search for a replacement for Luke Shaw.
Gutierrez impressed last season with his strong defensive and attacking performances, starting in 35 league matches, scoring twice, providing 7 assists, and contributing to 12 clean sheets, which helped Girona qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
Luke Shaw, despite his commitment to Manchester United, has struggled with recurring injuries. Last season, under Erik ten Hag, he managed only 12 Premier League starts due to muscle problems.
Given Shaw’s injury history, Manchester United is eager to secure a dependable replacement, and Gutierrez seems to be the ideal candidate. However, by making the move to United, Gutierrez would miss out on playing in the Champions League next season.
