“I warned against signing him but you didn’t listen. Now we are going to face the consequences. I just knew that he was going to flop soon. He’s not going to survive in the Premier League” – This is according to Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand as he had cautioned Manchester United against signing a striker who had scored 11 goals in his former club following his performance against Brighton.

Manchester United have been cautioned about pursuing Brentford’s star striker, Ivan Toney, despite earlier connections to several top Premier League clubs.

The England international was expected to be one of the most sought-after forwards this summer. However, none of the major clubs, including United, have taken definitive action.

Toney was heavily linked with Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United. However, Tottenham opted for Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke, while Arsenal and Chelsea have yet to make a move for Toney, leading to speculation about whether he is the right fit for these elite teams.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has voiced his reservations about Toney’s suitability for Old Trafford. Ferdinand questions whether the 28-year-old striker aligns with United’s current strategy and long-term goals.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Ferdinand remarked, “Personally, I wouldn’t target someone like Ivan Toney. I think his age and profile don’t match what the club needs. It doesn’t seem like the right fit. It’s surprising that despite talk of him possibly going to Arsenal or Chelsea for £100m, £80m, or whatever, there are no serious bidders. I don’t understand why that is. For Manchester United, I just don’t see it working.”

Toney had an outstanding 2022-23 Premier League season, ranking as the third-highest scorer with 20 goals in 33 matches, only behind Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.

This summer, Manchester United have already bolstered their attack by signing Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee, complementing their squad, which also features Rasmus Hojlund.

Nevertheless, recent reports indicate that the club may still be on the lookout for another forward as the transfer window draws to a close.

As the transfer window enters its final stages, all eyes will be on Manchester United’s next move.
