Reports suggest that a surprising new contender has emerged in the race to sign Marcus Rashford from Manchester United this summer.
Rashford kicked off his 2024/25 season by playing the entire match in United’s narrow 1-0 victory over Fulham at Old Trafford. At 26, he was notably absent from England’s Euro 2024 squad following a challenging season. However, this exclusion allowed him to fully participate in pre-season preparations under Erik ten Hag.
Despite this, it remains uncertain whether Rashford’s pre-season efforts will benefit Manchester United or another club. According to Goal, Barcelona has now expressed interest in acquiring the forward this summer.
The Catalan giants are reportedly close to finalizing the return of midfielder Ilkay Gundogan to Manchester City, just a year after he joined Barcelona on a free transfer. This move could free up funds for new signings, though it’s also aimed at balancing Barcelona’s €57 million investment in RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo.
Goal also reports that Barcelona’s manager, Hansi Flick, has specifically requested Rashford as he seeks a left winger capable of both dribbling and scoring. Previously, the club attempted to secure the services of Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams, who impressed for Spain at Euro 2024, but that deal fell through, leading Barcelona to explore options in the English market.
Earlier this week, Flick acknowledged the difficulties Barcelona faces in signing new players this summer, particularly with La Liga’s registration rules. He remarked, “I’m hopeful, but there’s still time. I trust the club’s efforts. We have more players in the squad, and I’m optimistic they’ll return from injury.
“I’m satisfied with the squad. When I signed my contract, I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but when you see all the players we have sidelined, I’m eager for their recovery.”
