Though not playing for City since January 2023 after falling out with Guardiola, Cancelo is still under contract with City until 2027. Having spent the later half of the 2022–23 campaign with Bayern Munich, he played the remaining season on loan at Barcelona. And since he returned from Portugal assignment, he has been collaborating with old squad mates.
THAT GUARDIOLA SAID
“He is undergoing instruction with us. We shall see; perhaps he will remain, perhaps go on loan. Not yet is what I know. He is working with us, and he performs really brilliantly in the training sessions. Football is his favourite game to play. We shall see, Guardiola said during a press conference. Specifically asked whether Cancelo may stay with City for the season, he said: “It might happen, sure.”
Although Cancelo was among City’s top performers in the Premier League championship victories 2020-21 and 2021-22, his relationship with the coach strained following World Cup drop from the starting line-up.
During one of Guardiola’s pre-match squad discussions, the Portuguese reportedly put on headphones and began listening to music. “Cancelo best be gone by the conclusion of the transfer window for the sake of the squad,” the coach advised sports director Txiki Begiristain shortly after.
