Manchester United now in the lead against Arsenal in transfer pursuit of La Liga star. Manchester United are reportedly now in the lead against Arsenal for the potential transfer of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.
Manchester United is reportedly gaining ground in the race to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, surpassing Arsenal as the leading contender for his transfer.
Zubimendi, who was part of Spain’s Euro 2024-winning squad this summer, has been impressive in La Liga and has long been a subject of transfer speculation. While Arsenal initially appeared to be the frontrunner for his signature, recent reports suggest Manchester United now holds the upper hand in securing the 25-year-old’s services.
Manchester United is keen to bolster its midfield this summer, and Zubimendi has emerged as a potential candidate to replace the aging Casemiro, whose departure from Old Trafford has been anticipated for some time. With Casemiro’s performance declining last season, Zubimendi represents a promising and younger option that could better suit Erik ten Hag’s tactical needs. However, he is not the only midfield prospect linked to the Red Devils.
Zubimendi’s transfer links come shortly after Manchester United’s efforts to acquire Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain, as reported by CaughtOffside. PSG is likely to offload midfielders this summer to facilitate the arrival of Joao Neves from Benfica, which might make Ugarte available at a reasonable price. While Ugarte remains a strong candidate, Zubimendi’s profile also makes him an appealing alternative.
Additionally, Scott McTominay’s future at Manchester United remains uncertain, with recent links to Fulham, as noted by Fabrizio Romano. However, Romano indicated that the club is not in a rush to offload the Scottish international and will only consider selling him if a substantial offer is received.
As for Arsenal, they are now expected to shift their focus to Mikel Merino, Zubimendi’s teammate at Sociedad and fellow Spain international, according to Sport.
