Former Doncaster Rovers midfielder Tommy Rowe, who is now 35, made a surprising appearance for United. This marked his first return to the club’s red jersey in over two decades, having previously left the United academy for Stockport County at 15.
Recently, The Manchester Evening News reported that United are considering Rowe for a role as a player-coach in their academy. This position would replace Tom Huddlestone, who held the role for the past two seasons before leaving United this summer.
The player-coach role for United’s u21s was first introduced in 2021 with former academy graduate Paul McShane, who returned to assist with coaching the u21s before transitioning to a full-time role with the u15s.
United have seen positive results from this innovative role and are eager to find another qualified candidate. Rowe, who recently ended his contract with Doncaster Rovers and is looking to transition into coaching, appears to be an ideal fit.
