Manchester United fans often feel a pang of regret whenever Sadio Mane’s name comes up during transfer discussions.
The Senegalese forward famously rejected United in favor of Liverpool back in 2016. Adding salt to the wound, it seemed a deal for the Africa Cup of Nations winner was nearly finalized until Jurgen Klopp intervened with a personal call.
Instead of seeing Mane in their lineup, United supporters watched him flourish into a Liverpool legend, while their alternative signings failed to match the former Southampton star’s achievements. For many United fans, Mane represents the one that got away.
“I had the contract ready with Manchester United. Everything was set,” Mane recalled. “But then I chose Liverpool because of Klopp’s vision. I still remember his first call. He said, ‘We have a significant project at Liverpool and I want you to be part of it.’
“He even asked me which position I preferred since I played on both flanks at Southampton. I said the left, but he mentioned that Philippe Coutinho occupied that side. I immediately offered to play on the right. I could see myself fitting in anywhere on the pitch.”
Jose Mourinho, then the manager of United, had to opt for Henrikh Mkhitaryan instead, who never replicated Mane’s consistent performance levels for Liverpool. Over six years at Anfield, Mane helped secure the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, and Club World Cup titles.
Today, Mane’s career has taken another turn. After a stint with Bayern Munich, he moved to the Middle East last summer, joining Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr.
There have been rumors of Mane possibly returning to RB Salzburg, the club where he shone before his move to Southampton in 2014. Salzburg is currently managed by Pep Lijnders, Klopp’s former assistant, and a familiar face to Mane.
However, Mane’s agent, Bjorn Bezemer, has dismissed these speculations, affirming that Mane is committed to staying with Al Nassr. “I haven’t had any discussions with clubs about Sadio,” Bezemer told Fabrizio Romano. “He is preparing for the season with Al Nassr and has no intention of leaving. The club is very satisfied with him.”
