According to Fabrizio Romano, Marseille is on the verge of securing Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood.
The 22-year-old recently visited Carrington to discuss his future as United seeks a permanent transfer for him.
Marseille agreed on a fee on Monday and entered advanced negotiations for the transfer. However, Greenwood is still attracting significant interest from other European clubs.
Despite this, comments from Marseille Mayor Benoit Payan have cast doubt on the deal.
โI donโt want my club to be associated with shame,โ Payan told French radio station RMC. โIt is not acceptable.โ Additionally, fans have voiced their opposition to Greenwood joining, with the hashtag #GreenwoodNotWelcome trending on social media.
These developments suggested the transfer might fall through, but Romano believes this is unlikely.
โOlympique Marseille keep working on Mason Greenwood personal terms agreement,โ he wrote on X.
โDiscussions underway about the salary structure after โฌ30m package deal agreed with Man United. OM board and Roberto de Zerbi want to make it happen, talks continue.โ
Greenwood was arrested and charged with attempted rape, assault, and coercive control in 2022, though the charges were dropped a year later.
Greenwood has consistently denied the allegations and has not played for United since January 2022.
United considered bringing him back into the first-team squad last year but abandoned those plans following public backlash from fans.
Last season, he was loaned to Getafe, where he scored 10 goals in 36 appearances for the Spanish club.
United has always intended to sell Greenwood permanently this summer, though another loan move or reintegration into Erik ten Hagโs squad have not been completely ruled out.
