Donny van de Beek has returned to Manchester United after his loan stint with Eintracht Frankfurt and is slated to commence pre-season training at Carrington next week.

Manchester United is actively seeking a permanent transfer for Donny van de Beek this summer, as the midfielder looks for a new beginning after four years at the club. Van de Beek, who spent the latter part of last season on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt, only started four games there, leading the Bundesliga club to opt out of the £9.5 million purchase option.

The former Ajax star has already made his way back to Manchester United and will join pre-season training at Carrington on Monday, July 8.

All parties are aiming for a permanent move during this transfer window. Van de Beek has just one year left on his contract, which he signed upon joining from Ajax for £35 million in August 2020. This situation makes another loan unlikely, as he would leave on a free transfer once the loan ends.

Van de Beek can discuss a free transfer with overseas clubs starting January 1. United, however, intends to recoup part of the fee they paid for him and does not plan to let him leave for free this summer, though his contract situation has so far discouraged potential buyers.

John Murtough, United’s then-football director, and Matt Hargreaves, the club’s director of football negotiations, visited van de Beek in Frankfurt shortly before Murtough’s departure in April. It was decided that arranging a permanent transfer would be a priority this summer.

With Erik ten Hag still managing the team, van de Beek is unlikely to be part of the first-team squad next season, especially since United has signed Mason Mount and seen Kobbie Mainoo make his first-team debut.

Manchester United might be on the lookout for another midfielder this summer, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte rumored to be linked to the club.

Mount is expected to have a more prominent role after a first season marred by injuries.

A knee injury during Ten Hag’s first season ended any hopes of van de Beek establishing himself at United. He has not completed a full 90 minutes since his time at Everton in March 2022. Over four seasons at Old Trafford, van de Beek has made just 62 appearances, scoring twice and providing two assists.
