Manchester United are in search of a new left-back for the upcoming season, following a challenging campaign where their primary choices for the position were sidelined for most of the year. Renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed to GIVEMESPORT that the Red Devils have a “genuine” interest in Bournemouth’s young talent, Milos Kerkez, as they look to bolster their squad.

Last season, Luke Shaw managed to play only 12 Premier League matches due to injuries, while his backup, Tyrell Malacia, was absent for the entire season. Despite a promising start with United after joining from Feyenoord in 2022, Malacia’s knee injury kept him off the pitch for 11 months. Although both players have the potential to start for United, their injury records have prompted the club to consider more reliable options. Kerkez has emerged as a potential candidate.

In June, reports suggested that United were eyeing the Bournemouth defender after an impressive debut season in the Premier League. Romano mentioned earlier in the summer that United were keeping tabs on the Hungarian player, who joined Bournemouth from AZ Alkmaar last year. However, Bournemouth is expected to demand a substantial transfer fee for the 20-year-old.

United’s interest in various new players has been noted, particularly after INEOS became minority owners, aiming to enhance the squad. The left-back position remains a priority due to Shaw and Malacia’s recent unavailability. Other targets for United include Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte, and Matthijs de Ligt.

Romano, speaking exclusively to GIVEMESPORT, confirmed United’s “genuine” interest in Kerkez but noted that the club is also exploring other options. He stated:

“Manchester United’s interest is genuine, so I think Kerkez could be one of the options, but not the only one from what I have heard.

“They are also assessing other options. I think they’re waiting to see what happens with any other opportunities in the market for that position, and they will make a decision. But left-back is another position they want to cover for this summer, for sure.”

Kerkez impressed at Bournemouth this season despite being relatively unknown when he joined. His journey included youth stints in Serbia, Austria, and Hungary before a significant move to AC Milan at 17, spurred by a call from Paolo Maldini. Finding first-team opportunities scarce at Milan, Kerkez transferred to AZ Alkmaar, where he became a regular, scoring three goals in 33 Eredivisie appearances.

Having adjusted well to the Premier League under Andoni Iraola’s guidance, Kerkez’s performances have caught United’s eye. If manager Erik ten Hag decides to pursue his signing, Kerkez could soon be making a move to Old Trafford.
