Manchester United are actively pursuing the transfer of Bayern Munich’s centre-back Matthijs de Ligt. Initially reported by The Peoples Person, United identified the Dutch defender as an alternative to Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite. With the Branthwaite deal uncertain, United’s interest in De Ligt has intensified, and Bayern Munich appears open to selling him for €70 million.

Indications suggest that De Ligt’s move to United is becoming more likely. Reports indicate that De Ligt has expressed his desire to leave Bayern, driven by his dissatisfaction with manager Thomas Tuchel. Furthermore, Bayern’s interest in defenders Hiroki Ito and Jonathan Tah suggests that De Ligt’s playing time could be reduced next season. Negotiations have reportedly taken place with several Premier League clubs, including Manchester United.

Journalist Florian Plettenberg confirmed United’s interest, stating, “We’ve been told that Manchester United have opened talks about Matthijs de Ligt on the player’s side now. Understand that #MUFC have gathered more information about the 24 y/o in recent days as he can leave Bayern with a suitable offer as revealed. De Ligt, ready to leave Bayern and open to join ManUtd as he will not become the central defender No. 4 or 5. Still no contact between the clubs yet.”

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano also noted, “Manchester United made contact with Matthijs de Ligt’s camp as he’s one of the options being considered as new CB — including Branthwaite. De Ligt, open to joining United even with no UCL football. Bayern could sell De Ligt this summer, up to Man United’s decision.”

The Telegraph highlighted that although United have not yet directly contacted Bayern, they appear ready to make a move. The newspaper suggested that United might negotiate a fee lower than the £65 million Bayern paid Juventus for De Ligt in 2022. While De Ligt could bolster United’s defense next season, his recent injury issues might pose a concern for a club already grappling with fitness problems.
