Over the previous two years, Chelsea has seen a lot of upheaval; among the players that departed Stamford Bridge last summer were N’Golo Kante, Christian Pulisic, Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The Blues went from placing in 10th place in 2023 to sixth position last season, so it’s not like the significant personnel change has produced much improvement.
Though major changes are still possible this season, just a small number of players have been formally reported as leaving the club this summer. Not just in terms of his on-field performance, the first one will definitely leave a big void in the squad.
Thiago Silva has announced his leaving from West London to return to Brazil, where he would rejoin Fluminense, the team he had spent some years before coming to Milan in 2009. The news arrived back in May. Silva had a great season last year, particularly given that his injuries kept him from playing as much football as he might have.
He managed the pressures of the game so brilliantly, which is evidence of his professionalism; it will be painful to see the man who captained Chelsea countless times leave the changing room.
With their contracts expiring today, the young right-backs Josh Brooking and Noah Hay have also announced their leaving; the Champions League champion is among just three players who have gone thus far.
Still, a lot more departures might happen in the next weeks. Players like Conor Gallagher and Trevoh Chalobah pique many teams’ interest. Gallagher has one year left on his deal, hence it will probably be determined whether to sell him or provide him a fresh contract. Furthermore improbable is the club allowing him to move on a free transfer.
