Manchester United are set to sign a new central defender this summer, with Raphael Varane expected to leave when his contract expires at the end of the month. One of the potential replacements being considered is Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo. According to Sport, Manchester United are making a determined effort to secure the Uruguayan defender.

To entice Araujo to Old Trafford, the Red Devils are reportedly offering to nearly double his current salary from £114,000 to £228,000 per week. Meanwhile, Barcelona hopes to extend Araujo’s contract beyond June 2026. If they cannot reach an agreement, they plan to demand at least £63.5 million for his transfer.

Despite Araujo’s strong performances in La Liga, where he has a 90 percent pass completion rate and averages nearly three long balls per game, Manchester United should be wary of overspending due to his injury history. The 25-year-old also has a 73 percent success rate in aerial duels, with 4.3 recoveries and 2.5 clearances per game, making him a viable candidate to replace Varane.

However, since the 2020/21 season, Araujo has missed almost 75 games for both club and country due to injuries, drawing parallels to Varane’s own injury challenges. Considering these concerns, Manchester United should not offer more than £45 million for Araujo.

The club has faced numerous defensive injuries over the past year, making it essential not to overspend on another injury-prone center-back. While Araujo would be a valuable addition, the club should approach negotiations with financial caution to ensure they acquire a reliable player without overcommitting funds.
