Despite the league disappointment, United’s season ended on a high note with an FA Cup victory over Manchester City, securing Europa League qualification. This achievement wasn’t enough to prevent Ineos, the co-owners, from launching a review into manager Erik ten Hag’s performance.
Initially, it seemed likely that Ten Hag would lose his job. However, after evaluating the situation and consulting several other managers, including Thomas Tuchel, Ineos decided to retain Ten Hag for the upcoming season.
Now, Ten Hag, 54, is on the verge of signing a new contract that will keep him at Manchester United until 2027. According to The Mirror, he has secured a two-year extension worth nearly £27 million, despite being close to dismissal just weeks ago. He has reportedly agreed to the new deal in principle after discussions with the club’s leadership.
United and Ten Hag’s representatives are finalizing the terms of the contract, expected to be confirmed this week. The deal will include performance-related clauses for both Ten Hag and the team.
Part of the agreement involves changes to United’s coaching staff, with former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy set to join Ten Hag’s backroom team.
Currently earning £9 million a year, Ten Hag, who became manager in 2022, has won two trophies in two seasons – the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup.
A significant point of the new contract discussions involves the job title, with Ineos favoring a head coach structure rather than a manager. Ten Hag has control over signings, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants a sporting director to oversee transfers.
In 2022, Ten Hag said: “I am ultimately responsible for the results. I value cooperation, but control over transfers is essential for me.”
Ratcliffe has decided that United’s new sporting director, with whom the club is in talks – Dan Ashworth from Newcastle United – will lead recruitment, and the head coach will report to him. Ratcliffe has also appointed technical director Jason Wilcox to develop a playing style model to be implemented throughout the club, from the first team to the academy.
