By the end of the week, Chelsea is expected to officially confirm Enzo Maresca’s arrival as the new manager. Maresca will sign a five-year contract with the option for an additional year.
Following Leicester City’s Championship victory and promotion to the Premier League, Mauricio Pochettino visited Stamford Bridge. The Daily Telegraph reports that legal proceedings are finalizing the agreement between Chelsea and Maresca, with an announcement possibly coming as early as Friday.
US investors Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali have committed to a five-year agreement with Maresca, with a one-year extension option, in an effort to bring stability to the team after several turbulent seasons. Pochettino, Maresca’s predecessor, had agreed to a two-year deal with a three-year option last summer but held the position for just a year. Similarly, Graham Potter had a five-year contract but was dismissed after seven months. Thomas Tuchel, on the other hand, had a first 18-month contract starting in January 2021.
Maresca is expected to bring at least six staff members from Leicester City to Chelsea, including former Blues goalkeeper Willy Caballero, who assisted Maresca last season. Joining them in west London will be coaches Danny Walker and Roberto Vitiello, goalkeeper coach Michele de Bernardin, fitness coach Marcos Alvarez, and first-team analyst Javier Molina Caballero.
Maresca previously managed at Parma in Serie B before taking on his second managerial role at Leicester City. The 44-year-old was also part of Manchester City’s staff, where Pep Guardiola supported his ambition to become a “great manager.” Between 2022 and 2023, Maresca served as one of Guardiola’s deputies and was particularly noted for his work with the club’s youth team, drawing comparisons to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.
Maresca joined Manchester City in August 2020 and led the club’s Under-23 team to a Premier League 2 title as manager of the Elite Development Squad. In May 2021, Guardiola praised Maresca, stating, “We are thrilled with Enzo Maresca. He demonstrated he will become an exceptional manager in the future with all the organization he has done with the EDS [elite development squad]. Outstanding.” Guardiola added that he believed Maresca, like Arteta, would become an incredible manager due to his significant contribution to the development of young players.
