Former Man United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has been appointed as the manager of shocking Premier League Club this evening
Legendary Manchester United player Edwin van der Sar has made insinuations about maybe playing again after a year away from the game.
After his playing career ended, the former goalie stepped into the Ajax boardroom. Beginning in 2012 as the head of marketing for the Amsterdam club, Van der Sar moved into the role of sporting CEO in 2015 and then CEO in 2016.
The Dutchman declared in the summer of 2023 that he would step down from this position after Ajax had a challenging season due to Erik ten Hag’s transfer to Old Trafford. A cerebral hemorrhage shortly later sent the 53-year-old to the hospital, but he has since made a full recovery.
Van der Sar said on Instagram that he had taken a year off from football and that he could be ready to return in some manner. “Today marks precisely one year since I announced my resignation as CEO of Ajax,” he said.
“I appreciate all of my coworkers’ kind farewells. One of the greatest joys of my life has been to serve this club, first as a player and then as CEO.
“This time was full of memorable moments, but every trip has its share of difficult periods as well. Reflecting on the remarkable experiences and amazing individuals that were part of it, I reflect back. All expertly captured in a single image.
“I had time to recuperate and think with my family and friends over the most recent period. In the near future, it’s time for fresh experiences and adventures. I appreciate you everyone.”
It seems improbable that United will hire Van der Sar as CEO should he decide to rejoin the football team. Omar Berrada was most recently hired by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe to take on this responsibility.
What is certain is that because of his efforts during his six years at Old Trafford, Van der Sar will always be warmly remembered by United supporters.
