Tyrell Malacia was seen celebrating Manchester United’s FA Cup final triumph at Wembley, delighting fans who had missed him during his extended absence. The 24-year-old defender, who joined from Feyenoord in 2022 for approximately £15 million, has been out of action since undergoing knee surgery last summer. His last match for United was on May 28, 2023.
Initially expected to return to the team in February, Erik ten Hag later revealed that Malacia would likely be sidelined for the entire 2023/24 season. “I think it’s going to be difficult for him to be available this season,” Ten Hag commented.
Fans became even more concerned when Malacia went silent on social media, with his last Instagram post dated July 11, 2023, and his last tweet appearing shortly after. However, on Saturday afternoon, he was seen on the Wembley pitch celebrating United’s 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final alongside his teammates.
Supporters were ecstatic to see him after his long hiatus. Earlier in the week, Erik ten Hag spoke about Malacia in an interview with Voetbal International. “Tyrell Malacia didn’t play a single minute of football this season,” he noted. “In fact, he didn’t even spend a single moment out on the training pitch. We signed him as our back-up for Luke Shaw.”
Ten Hag also lauded Shaw, who missed a large part of the season due to injury. “Luke Shaw is the best left back in the world,” he said. “This guy is so good. But he has suffered a horrible injury at the start of his career and because of this, he will never be able to play 60 games per season. The injuries have been really crazy.”
