Along the way, the 53-year-old England national team manager has taught a number of elite players and witnessed a good number of Premier League games.
Now, though, the England manager has singled out one Premier League player he knows quite well for a lot of high praise for his on-field performance this season.
When asked about Phil Foden at the most recent Football Writers’ Association award presentation (via Henry Winter), Southgate began by mentioning the first time he ever saw the midfielder.

This season Foden has demonstrated his class.
The 23-year-old has contributed 13 more goals than he did in 48 games the previous season in 51 games played across all competitions.
Given his FWA Men’s Player of the Year title and his nominations for the Premier League and City Player of the Season honors, it’s clear why Southgate has been so taken with him.
Foden is expected to be a member of the England squad for the forthcoming European Championship in Germany this summer, having already made 33 appearances for the team under Southgate, during which he has scored four goals and provided eight assists.
