VAR was once again the subject of debate following an odd judgment that resulted in a disallowed Chelsea penalty.

During the first half of their match against Brighton, Facundo Buonanotte was adjudged to have fouled Marc Cucurella, and the Blues were given a penalty.
However, replays revealed that Buonanotte won the ball in a well-timed challenge, prompting VAR to summon referee Michael Salisbury to examine it.

Salisbury went to the monitor and overruled the penalty, but for some reason requested a drop ball instead of a Chelsea corner.

And on a day when it was announced that Premier League clubs are planning to vote on possibly removing VAR, officiating proven to be problematic again.

Many fans on social media were perplexed by the verdict, with one on X saying: “Good call, not a penalty, but should have been a corner for Chelsea.”
So, since it’s not a penalty, why is it not a corner? Even when VAR works ‘right,’ they still get it wrong; trash it,” said a second.

A third remarked, “I don’t understand some of the officiating in the EPL. If Chelsea does not get a penalty, they will receive a corner. It’s as obvious as day.

“Sorry. No pen. No corner. Chelsea will not get the ball. “Wtf,” said a fourth.

Fortunately for Chelsea, they seized the lead just after half-time when Cole Palmer deftly headed home Cucurella’s cross from the left.
