OFFICIAL NOW: Manchester United completes the signing of £80m European biggest prospect
Manchester United are reportedly aiming to beat Arsenal to the signature of Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyokeres in the upcoming summer transfer window, according to Portuguese publication O Jogo. Arsenal have shown consistent interest in the Swedish striker, with Mikel Arteta believed to be seeking a reliable goal-scorer to strengthen his attacking options. However, Manchester United have now entered the race and are keen on securing the prolific striker for themselves.
Once known for their explosive attacking football, featuring powerful wingers and clinical centre-forwards, United have struggled in recent seasons to replicate that same firepower. Their attacking woes were especially evident last season when they scored just 44 Premier League goals—only three relegated teams and Everton managed fewer. As a result, bringing in a new striker has become a major priority for Erik ten Hag’s side. Initially, Liam Delap was identified as a top choice, but he opted for Chelsea, largely due to the lure of Champions League football.
With Delap off the table, Manchester United have turned their attention to Gyokeres. Sporting are reportedly open to letting their star forward go, provided they receive around £59 million. The 26-year-old, who has a contract with the Portuguese side until 2028, is viewed as a valuable asset. His incredible form last season, contributing to 67 goals across all competitions, has made him one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe.
United’s pursuit could be complicated by financial constraints, with reports suggesting the club will need to generate funds through player sales before making any major signings. In contrast, Arsenal appear to be in a stronger financial position, which could give them an edge in the race for Gyokeres. Arteta is reportedly eager to bring in a top-class striker to elevate his squad and provide a more consistent goal threat than current options Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
If either club manages to land Gyokeres, it would be considered a major transfer success. His scoring ability and overall attacking impact could prove vital for a team with ambitions of competing for the Premier League title next season.
