Lord Sebastian Coe says that Sir Alex Ferguson almost managed Team GB’s men’s football team at the 2012 Olympics in London.
11 years have passed since Danny Boyle’s memorable opening event at the London Stadium, which used to be called the Olympic Stadium, marked the start of London 2012.
They hadn’t played football in the Olympics since 1974, but they decided to put together a new team for the home Games.
At first, the Scottish, Welsh, and Northern Irish FAs were against Team GB entering a team that would only have players from England and Wales.
However, a compromise was finally reached. Coe, who was in charge of planning the 2012 Olympics, says he tried to get Ferguson, a famous manager for Manchester United, to take over as coach.
“We were really close. Because of how weak we were around our Celtic cousins, I came up with the idea.
“All of a sudden, I realized that having a coach who wasn’t exactly English would be the one thing that would bring them all together,” Coe told the Daily Mail.
“I didn’t tell anyone about it, but I called Bob Charlton and asked, ‘Am I out to lunch here?'” “No, I’ll have Alex call you,” he answered. “Weeks passed.
On a Friday night, I got a call while I was in a Tesco in Cobham. I was at the bar for butter and fats when he said, “Seb, it’s Alex here.” It was a no ID.
“I gave one of my daughters a lot of cash and told her to keep putting things in the cart. I told her, ‘This is what you need for a long talk. I’m in the grocery store.'”
He said, “Well, I don’t know” after I told him about the idea. There was a pause, and he said, “Oh my God, I’m already choosing the team in my head.”
“Later, I went to the BBC review of the year, and Alex was there.” Alex shrugged and told me the answer was yes. “Okay,” I said.
