The ex-Red Devils icon is set to step into the role next month after numerous discussions with the Football Association of Ireland (FAI).

Between 2013 and 2018, Keane worked as Martin O’Neill’s assistant for the Irish national team.

Now, he emerges as a possible replacement for John O’Shea, who temporarily filled in after Stephen Kenny’s departure in November.

Keane brings a wealth of experience to the table, having briefly served as Aston Villa’s assistant manager from July to November 2014 before focusing on his Irish role. He later joined O’Neill as Nottingham Forest’s assistant manager in January 2019, leaving six months later.

Before coaching, Keane had a notable playing career, including stints at Sunderland from 2006 to 2008 and Ipswich Town from 2009 to 2011.

Besides coaching, the Man United legend is praised as a football pundit.

While he turned down an offer to manage Sunderland again, Keane moved into punditry, resonating with fans due to his candid approach.

However, if the FAI sees him fit for the role, Keane might return to management soon.

In a recent Stick to Football podcast, he mentioned his interest in international management, seeing it as less stressful than club-level management.
