According to estimates, Chelsea would lose more than 10 points next season if they break the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Since Todd Boehly’s company took bought the Premier League club at the end of May 2022, the Blues have spent nearly £1 billion on new signings.
Chelsea must sell more than £100 million worth of players.
According to recent estimates, Chelsea must now raise more than £100 million by June 30 or risk breaching Premier League financial restrictions.
Former Manchester City advisor Stefan Borson recently told talkSPORT: “In my opinion, there is certainly trouble on the horizon, and they will undoubtedly fail FFP for the current season unless – and it appears unlikely – they sell well over 100 million worth of players by June 30th.”
“However, the window in which they may do so is now relatively limited because the Euros follow the season.
“Someone like Conor Gallagher will be in the Euros starting June 14th, so if they want to ship him before the 30th, they must act swiftly, and potential bidders will be aware that Chelsea needs to sell players.
“This breach that Chelsea may be preparing for is considerably larger than Everton’s, and, more crucially, they will deem it premeditated. They cannot hide behind a stadium and unwittingly violate FFP.”
Kieran Maguire, a football financial expert, has identified a “mitigating factor” that could benefit Chelsea if they receive a points deduction.
Maguire told Football Insider: “If Chelsea are prosecuted, the club will be penalised, so the change in ownership is meaningless.
“Otherwise, clubs could get away with irresponsible behaviour by handing over the club to someone else with a clean slate.” It may, however, be used to mitigate the penalties, and they appear to have self-reported their possible violations.
“We saw this with Birmingham City when they found they had exceeded their spending constraints. As a result, they did receive a reduction in the points deduction that was applied to them; Chelsea’s new owners could do the same.”
According to Football Insider, Chelsea ‘are expected to be punished more than 10 points if they breach Profit and Sustainability Rules next season’.
Pete O’Rourke, the website’s senior correspondent, gave more information on the Inside Track podcast, saying: “It continues changing, but I think if the breaches are more significant than Everton’s, it will be more than 10 points.
“I think that’s pretty obvious and I think that’ll be the case – but then we must see if Chelsea appeal.”
Darren Bent: Romelu Lukaku should have a second chance.
Former Tottenham striker Darren Bent believes Chelsea might save millions in the summer by giving Romelu Lukaku another shot in Mauricio Pochettino’s team next season.
Bent told talkSPORT: “If you can get him back on a free, that’s a no-brainer for me.” However, he does not belong to my football club. It’s free; you don’t have to buy him. For me, it’s obvious, but I understand.
“Chelsea fans are definitely reflecting on the interview he gave and how disrespectful he was to the club, and some of them just can’t let it go, and I understand that.
“I can see that side of the argument, but if you’re looking to purchase a center-forward for 80-90 million and you’ve got one there for free… And listen, the talk must begin with him and Poch.
“If somehow they can fix that relationship and then save that £80, £90 million on a position they might need, it’s not the worst decision in the world.”
