For the first time since the team was charged with over 100 accusations for alleged violations of the Premier League’s financial regulations, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has spoken.
Should the six-time Premier League winners be found guilty of charges pertaining to financial information, profitability and sustainability, player and manager remuneration, failure to cooperate, and UEFA regulations, they could face a potential deduction of points or possibly be kicked out of the top division.
Alleged events are said to have occurred over a nine-year period, and the Premier League’s four-year inquiry is what led to Monday’s charges.
Manchester City said they had a “comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence” and that they “look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all” in response to the reported violations.
Manager Pep Guardiola reaffirmed the Blues’ optimistic response to the accusations on Friday when he spoke to the media in advance of Sunday’s matchup with Aston Villa.
“It seems to me that we are already under condemnation. The same is true of UEFA; we were already deemed guilty. The club demonstrated our total innocence. You are aware of my stance,” Guardiola remarked.
We are fortunate to be in a nation where one is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. We appear to have received a punishment already. I have no idea what is going to happen.
“We believe we have competent legal counsel, and I will stand by our position. What transpires will determine the time. We’ll see what the Premier League determines as a judge. We have the same innocence with Uefa.
“Until proven guilty, everyone in this country is presumed innocent.” Even still, Uefa’s judgement was not that. The onus now shifts to the attorneys on both sides to defend each other.
“It won’t last a month, two months, or three months. We will observe that, since we are aware of what transpired with Uefa.
