The move by Chelsea’s owners to hire Bernardo Cueva could put Mauricio Pochettino and those owners in a bad mood, but Pochettino says he will decide if Cueva will be on the sidelines.

The Blues have agreed to give Brentford about £750,000 in compensation and will give Cueva the job of building the club a new set-piece department.

So far, Chelsea hasn’t had a set-piece coach. Instead, goalkeeper coach Toni Jimenez has been in charge, and Pochettino has played down the importance of this job in the past.

But Chelsea is one of the few teams in the Premier League that doesn’t have a dedicated coach for the position. Coaches like Austin MacPhee at Aston Villa and Nicolas Jover at Arsenal are often very visible and loud on the sidelines, shouting directions before set pieces.

Even though Pochettino says he supports Cueva’s hiring, he didn’t come up with the idea, and the Argentine is sure that he will decide if the set-piece coach plays a part in games.

Pochettino said, “I am the head coach, and I will decide if some people are going to be with me or not, and if I’m going to add more people to the sides or not.”

“I work on them sometimes, and Jesus Perez, who is his assistant, works on them other times.” We are a coaching team that already works on set pieces. It’s not just the gym or the military area where we work out.

He went on to say, “Cueva’s arrival is the idea of the owner and the sporting directors, and we fully support it.”

“We know that the club wants to make a global area about set pieces to help these two people.” If people want to help us get better and learn more, they are welcome to come here. We can’t fight things that will make us better and maybe even help us win games.

Pochettino had said last month, “We work a lot on set-pieces,” which made people question the need for specialised set-piece teachers. After that, it’s about how good the person is. It’s about those who take.

“We don’t have a medic.” Ben Chilwell may be good at giving birth, but we don’t have an expert for anything else. We work hard at set pieces if you want to get good at them. Then you need people who can take it.

“When you have good takers, and Wolves do, as do Manchester City and other teams.” It’s not because of the work. We work in the same way. But it’s hard to find good takers.

“We have coaches who are experts.” Our job is to teach and take care of everything. You can have a specialist and market that expert. You can also have the specialist and not push them. How you present the idea of working on set pieces is up to you.

“We have a specialist, a group of set-piece analysts, coaches, and a lot of work to do.” The quality comes next. It was brought up that we should look for a good specific player for next season.
