Raheem Sterling needs to “fight on his hands” to revive his England career, according to Gareth Southgate.
Since making his senior England debut in 2012, the Chelsea attacker has won 82 caps, and he has scored 18 of his 20 international goals while under Southgate’s leadership. But on Thursday, he was left out of the England team for the sixth time running.
In recent months, players such as Jarrod Bowen, Cole Palmer, and Anthony Gordon have surpassed him in the England hierarchy. Sterling’s final England game was the team’s quarterfinal World Cup loss to France in Qatar.
This season, Sterling has appeared in all but three of Chelsea’s Premier League games; however, as the season has gone on, his playing time has decreased.
“Well, it’s not shut,” Southgate responded when asked if Sterling’s future with England was still open.
We must admit that Cole is the Chelsea player who starts every game and goes off as a starter right now. Bowen has a fight on his hands given Anthony Gordon’s form and the goals he has scored. We are aware of the extensive and well-documented actions of Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka.
It’s the part of the pitch where there is the most competition for spots, as I’ve mentioned in previous picks. We know he can perform in our setting in the games that really count, so we won’t ever close the door. However, he is currently visible behind those guys.
This year’s 30th birthday, Sterling, who has occasionally led England as captain under Southgate, has admittedly been disappointed not to be included in recent selections.
“We’ve always tried to balance who can do the job for us, loyalty, but I do believe over time we’ve given opportunity to form as well, and we’re doing that again with Gordon,” Southgate said of Sterling.
