Southgate was upset that Stones had hurt himself again, and he said that Chelsea defender Reece James had asked not to be in the group because he had just returned to play after a hamstring problem.
Southgate told him, “I’m really sorry for John.”

His play is of a very high standard. He’s having a tough time with injuries right now, but that gives other players a chance, and we do need to learn more about the players in that area of the field.
Southgate also said, “I wanted to call Reece James, but he doesn’t think he’s ready yet, and I get that.”
There are concerns about James Maddison, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, and Wilson’s health.
