Speaking as a pundit for TNT Sports before the Premier League encounter between Manchester United and Everton, Rooney, who shared the field with Rashford during their time at Old Trafford, didn’t hold back in sharing his thoughts.
Rashford, now 26, has come under intense scrutiny this season due to his declining goal-scoring form and off-field controversies, drawing criticism even from manager Erik ten Hag.
Rooney, known for his prolific goal-scoring record of 253 goals in 559 appearances for Manchester United, urged Rashford to step up his game and take on more responsibility as a senior member of the squad.
When asked about whether he sympathized with Rashford’s situation, Rooney was forthright, pointing out that Rashford holds a privileged position playing for Manchester United and emphasizing the need for him to find consistency.
“He’s in a privileged position where he’s playing for Manchester United,” Rooney commented. “I’ve said before, he’s the one player I really believed could go and get my goal-scoring record, and I hope he does because he’s a Manchester lad, but he needs to hit some consistency. Of course, he’s not having the best of seasons, but he needs to find some form and consistency and become a leader of this team.”
Rooney also pointed out Rashford’s low tally of eight Premier League goals this season and the frequent criticism of his performances. Rashford has been linked with a potential move away from Manchester United, with Paris Saint-Germain reportedly interested.
Expressing doubts about Rashford’s leadership qualities, Rooney stated, “I don’t think Marcus is that type of player, I don’t think he’s a leader, and sometimes his body language doesn’t look the best from that point of view. For me, I look at the likes of Casemiro, Raphael Varane, Bruno Fernandes as captain. They’re players who should be getting that out of Marcus because sometimes you need your teammates to get more out of you as well.”
