From Zidane to Southgate, here are the thirteen managers who have been mentioned as potential successors to Erik ten Hag at Manchester United

Coming up is the most important part of the season for Manchester United, and the FA Cup is their only chance to end the year with a trophy.

Before Christmas, United lost in the Champions League and the Carabao Cup. The first half of the season had some terrible results and efforts. The first few months of 2024 were better for United, and they built on that confidence in January and February. However, a loss to Fulham at Old Trafford and a 3-1 loss in the Manchester derby ended that good run of form.

While those losses were happening, United beat Nottingham Forest to make it to the quarterfinals of the FA Cup. If they win that title, the season might be over. United is 11 points behind Aston Villa in fourth place, and Erik ten Hag is feeling the heat.

There’s a chance that the manager will be replaced at the end of the season, and the bookies have made a list of coaches who could take over for Ten Hag. Based on odds from Betfair, here is a list of possible managers to replace Ten Hag.

Odds for Graham Potter: 7/2

The bookmakers think Graham Potter will be the best candidate to replace him, but fans don’t see him that way at all. He did a great job at Brighton, but his first time managing a big club, Chelsea, went badly, and now that he’s in charge of United, there will be even more attention.

The 48-year-old once worked with Dan Ashworth, who will soon be United’s sporting director, at Brighton. He seems like the right age to be a young English boss. They don’t like his choice, though, because they want a boss with more experience.

Odds on Simone Inzaghi: 15/2

Moving up in the manager market doesn’t cost much, but Simone Inzaghi is currently in second place and is in charge of Inter Milan, who are currently in first place in Serie A. Inzaghi played for Lazio for most of his career and got his first job as a manager there. From 2016 to 2021, he was in charge of the Rome club. After that, he went to work for Inter.

The chances for Thomas Tuchel are 9/1.

When given the chance, Thomas Tuchel has said nice things about United, and it has looked like he’s rolled his eyes at the club more than once. He won the Champions League with Chelsea by beating Manchester City in the final in 2021, but he is leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the season.

Tuchel won the Bundesliga on the last day of last season when Borussia Dortmund lost late in the game. This year, Bayer Leverkusen is also on track to win the league. He would make a better candidate, but there are new questions about him.

Odds on Ruben Amorim: 9/1

In the past 18 months, a number of English teams have been linked to Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim. After a successful time in Portugal, the manager seems to be in high demand. He is 39 years old and has never been a manager outside of Portugal. In his first full season in charge, he led Sporting to their first league win in 19 years. “I don’t want to say anything about these things.” I haven’t heard from Manchester United,” he said in November about the possible move to Old Trafford.

With Zinedine Zidane odds: 10/1

Since leaving Real Madrid in the summer of 2021, Zinedine Zidane has been mentioned with United many times, but there has been no sign that he will return to management. The Frenchman was the first coach to win the Champions League three times in a row while in charge of Real Madrid. However, he had access to some of the best players in the world. Some people have said that Zidane’s job with Real Madrid during those years was like “baby sitting.”

Odds on Gareth Southgate: 14/1

The bookmakers also have Gareth Southgate on their list of possible managers, which is another name that fans would not like. People don’t like how the Three Lions manager handles the national team, and his track record as a club manager isn’t good either. He doesn’t belong with United.

Odds on Roberto De Zerbi: 14/1

United is thought to be interested in Roberto de Zerbi, and the Italian is also seen as one of the top candidates to take over at Manchester City from Pep Guardiola. He has raised Brighton to a new level since Potter left, and his daring style of play has won him praise. De Zerbi tells his goalkeepers to draw attention from the other team’s press, and his team has some of the best build-up play in the Premier League.

Odds on Julen Lopetegui: 14/1

The last few years for Julen Lopetegui have been interesting as a manager. His jobs as a coach for Spain and Real Madrid didn’t go well, and he was most recently in charge of Wolves. A argument with the board put an end to that disappointing run, and it would be strange to see a former Wolves manager take over United as his next job.

Odds on Xabi Alonso Are 14/1

There is no need to say anything else about Xabi Alonso. He is a modern-day Liverpool hero. He has done a great job with Bayer Leverkusen, but his next job will probably be as a manager at Bayern Munich or Liverpool.

Is Hansi Flick odds: 16/1

As Hansi Flick, he was in charge of Bayern Munich for two years and then the German national team for another two years after leaving the Allianz Arena. His reputation has dropped since he failed to lead his country, and he hasn’t had a job since quitting that job. He won the Champions League with Bayern.

Odds on Antonio Conte: 20/1

Following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s firing, Antonio Conte was interested in taking over at Old Trafford. However, that opportunity has now passed, and his recent track record is not very good. Conte’s mean ways don’t fit with United’s morals, so he wouldn’t be a good fit.

Could ‘The Special One’ come back to United for a second time? Even though Jose Mourinho is still liked by people, it’s very unlikely that he would get the job again.

Odds on Julian Nagelsmann: 20/1

Julian Nagelsmann is a young manager with a lot of good accomplishments. He makes more sense than most of the other people on this list. He is in charge of Germany at the European Championship this summer, but his contract ends after the event, so he’s likely to go back to playing club football.
