Manchester United’s summer transfer plans will start to take shape under Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s new regime.

Ineos Group and Ratcliffe finalised a 25% buyout of United earlier this year, giving them control of football operations at Old Trafford. There were no new arrivals in January, but this is expected to change dramatically when the transfer window opens at the end of the season.

United have already been linked with potential new recruits for Erik ten Hag’s team. The Reds’ recruitment team is reportedly looking for a new midfielder, as well as a striker.

United is reportedly one of the clubs interested in signing Joao Neves, a Benfica midfielder. The midfielder began his career with the Primeira Liga club’s academy and has worked his way up through the ranks to become an important player of the first team.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Neves is a potential target for the Reds this summer as they consider transfer possibilities. However, it has been reported that Manchester City and other undisclosed Premier League clubs are interested in signing Neves.

According to Romano, Neves’ contract includes a release clause worth more than £100 million, and activating it would be the only way Benfica would enable the player to leave the club this summer. The Portuguese club sold Enzo Fernandez to Chelsea in January of last year, after the Stamford Bridge club paid the £106.8 million release clause.

“In terms of possible midfield signings coming in for United, the race remains open for Benfica wonderkid Joao Neves, who has been scouted by the Red Devils, and also by Manchester City,” Romano said in a statement.

“Benfica will insist on the release clause of €120 million (£103 million) being triggered, so it’s not an easy deal, but the interest from Premier League clubs is there in terms of scouting.”

Following reports that United could be in the running to sign Neves in January after allowing Alvaro Fernandez to join the Portuguese club on loan with the option to buy, Benfica issued an official statement denying any preference over Joao Neves.

“Under no circumstances did Sport Lisboa e Benfica negotiate with Manchester United or any other club regarding this player, nor do they intend to do so. Any information that points in a different direction is untrue.”

Meanwhile, United are apparently looking into Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee. According to Give Me Sport, the Reds are preparing scouting files on the striker in preparation for a move during the summer transfer window.

Bologna signed Zirkzee in 2022 for €8.5 million (£7.2 million) from Bayern Munich. He has already scored 13 goals in 50 games and is being linked with a move to the Premier League.

Arsenal, in addition to United, has been linked with signing Zirkzee in the past. Bayern Munich also reportedly has a €40 million (£34 million) buy-back provision in his contract in case another club makes an approach.
