‘He doesn’t know’ -Erling Haaland brutally hits back at Alexander-Arnold after Man City spending dig

Erling Haaland has offered the ultimate rebuttal to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s criticism of Manchester City’s spending.

City face Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool side at Anfield on Sunday in a Premier League contest that will have a significant impact on where the title ends up in May. Liverpool leads City by one point after 27 games.

City has won the trophy five times in the last six seasons, while Liverpool has only won the Premier League once in 2019/20. In an interview this week, Alexander-Arnold stated that Liverpool’s titles under Klopp’mean more’ to their club and fans because of the financial realities at both clubs.

Alexander-Arnold’s claim is easily debunked by anyone with a basic understanding of finance. While City has admittedly spent more than £1.2 billion on transfers under Pep Guardiola, Liverpool has spent between £803 million and £1.28 billion. Klopp has spent £80 million on players per trophy, with Guardiola coming in at the average. City spent more, but they also won more.

In response, City striker Erling Haaland summed up his counterpart’s thoughts by emphasising the emotion he felt when winning the treble last season, pointing out that Alexander-Arnold would have no idea what that was like.

Haaland told Sky Sports: “If he wants to say anything, that’s fine. I was here one year and won the treble, which was a fantastic sensation. I don’t think he’s aware of that sensation. That’s how I felt last season, and it was rather pleasant.

“They can talk all they want, and we can talk all we want. I’m not sure why he does that, but I don’t mind.

When asked about Sunday’s game, Haaland took another dig at Liverpool, reminding them that they were not in last season’s title race.

“It’s going to be a great game,” he added. “Liverpool are top of the league and have been the best team thus far. We must attempt to play at our best. Last year, I believe we were in a rather interesting title race. Perhaps someone was a little removed from the title chase at one point.

“That was a great thing. That is one of the best things about the Premier League: there are so many talented players. There are numerous contenders for the Premier League title; City won last year. We’ll try it again. It won’t be easy, but we’re fine.”
