Manchester United is currently evaluating Gareth Southgate as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag, as they unveil a three-man shortlist for the managerial position.

Gareth Southgate and two other individuals are being considered as potential successors to Erik ten Hag if he leaves Old Trafford in the summer, according to a new report.

Ten Hag is under tremendous pressure following United’s recent 3-1 loss to Manchester City, which left his team in sixth place, 19 points behind league leaders Liverpool.

It was alleged earlier this week that players at United are “increasingly doubtful” about the Dutchman’s future beyond this summer, with many believing that INEOS will fire him and hire a new manager.

ESPN, however, has stated that no decision has been made regarding Ten Hag’s future, but that ‘options are being examined to measure the credentials and availability of possible successors’.

In fact, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his staff are evaluating England manager Gareth Southgate, together with Roberto De Zerbi and Thomas Frank.

De Zerbi, who is being monitored by several teams, has impressed many at Brighton, while Thomas Frank’s choice to adopt a data-driven strategy has ‘won admirers’ at United.

Southgate is regarded as a ‘outsider’ for the role due to his standing at England, where he has not to decide on his future post beyond this summer’s Euros.

However, the story refers to his long-standing friendship with Dan Ashworth, who is on track to become United’s new sporting director. Ashworth previously worked for the FA.

Sources have also told ESPN that other managers and coaches are being considered, with INEOS determined to avoid being caught off guard this summer as big-name managers are connected with moves.

Ten Hag’s future has become a hot topic in recent days. Following their latest defeat to Manchester City, former United player Paul Scholes offered a brutally honest assessment of the 54-year-old’s current condition.

Speaking with Optus Sport, he said: “What we’re seeing is a million miles away from a club that should be challenging for the league. Every every season feels so far away.”

He added, “I believe they [INEOS] have already made up their mind. I don’t think he’ll be around next season. No.

“Based on the discussions we’ve had with Sir Jim, I believe there has been some hostility towards the club over the previous ten or eleven years, particularly in the last two. I don’t think he’s pleased with what’s happening.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if they are currently seeking for a new manager. I’m not saying it was the correct decision.”
