Jurgen Klopp said Ryan Gravenberch has ankle ligament damage and was furious with the way the officials handled Liverpool’s Carabao Cup final victory against Chelsea.
The Reds won the match 1-0 thanks to a late Virgil van Dijk goal, 118 minutes into extra time.
Gravenberch was stretchered out of the game in the first half after Moises Caicedo’s reckless challenge caused him to plant his studs on the Dutch midfielder’s ankle.
There was no punishment for the Chelsea player, and Gravenberch was obliged to celebrate with his teammates after the game while on crutches and wearing protective boots.
When asked about the injury, Klopp eventually stated that nothing was broken, but there was ligament damage. He did, however, address the refereeing performance first.
‘There were two sides fighting really hard, and the referee did not understand the quality of the game,’ Klopp said Sky Sports.
‘That’s how it is, and I apologise for that. I know you’ll make a big deal out of it, but everyone saw it.

‘I’m not sure if it’s too much, too soon, or something for these lads, but the issue was evident to me. We noticed a Chelsea foot print on the ankle, which is all you need for a card.
‘I hope it’s not too serious; they conducted an X-ray, so it’s not broken, but the ligaments got something, and that’s how it is. It’s all horrible, but everything else is great.
Gravenberch joins the long list of Liverpool squad ailments, and Klopp admits he may struggle to field a team on Wednesday when they face Southampton in the FA Cup.
‘We don’t currently have a team for Wednesday. The lads who came on can potentially play again, while the rest will be treated on Monday,’ he said.
‘I adore this country, but the schedule is not conducive to significant victories. We shall see the price we must pay, but we will fight for everything and see what happens next.
