Manchester United Owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe explains Chelsea bid after completing Manchster United takeover
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the new owner of Manchester United, has talked about why he wanted to buy Chelsea. He also seemed to use the club as an example to send a message to his new team.
A minority share in Manchester United was bought by the billionaire this week in a deal worth over $1.3bn. In 2022, when Roman Abramovich put Chelsea up for sale, the British investor said he wanted to buy them. This deal makes that happen.
Todd Boehly, an American, beat him to the deal and bought Chelsea for £4.25bn in May 2022. Ratcliffe has now said that he wants to play for Chelsea.
“We have some pretty cool sports clubs, like Formula 1, the America’s Cup, cycling, and so on, but we’ve always known that football is the biggest sport in the world and that the Premier League is the biggest league in the world,” he told reporters (via the Manchester Evening News). “So we’ve always wanted to own a Premier League team, but opportunities like that don’t come up very often, and at the time, we had no idea that Manchester United might be sold.” That’s how we ended up in that Chelsea answer.”
Since Boehly took over, Chelsea hasn’t been afraid to spend a lot of money on players. Even though Chelsea spent more than £1bn on players last summer, they are still only in 10th place in the Premier League table.
It was asked Ratcliffe if Chelsea had shown what not to do when it comes to spending money. The new owner of United didn’t say anything bad about Chelsea, but he did say that mistakes were being made again.
He said, “I don’t want to end by criticising Chelsea, but I would say that we made a lot of mistakes when we bought Lausanne and Nice.” “We’ve done some really bad things in both of those clubs.”
“The world is full of groups where making a mistake means getting shot, so no one ever sticks their head above the parapet.” But here at INEOS, we understand if you make a mistake. Just don’t do it again.
“That means we don’t feel sorry for them when they make the same mistake twice.” We’ve made mistakes in sports before we came to Manchester United, which makes me very happy. This would have been a lot harder for us if we hadn’t. Because it’s very big and out in the open.
