Man United Approve £90m Move for Brighton Midfielder Carlos Baleba as Amorim Targets January Reinforcements
Manchester United have reportedly approved a £90 million move for Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba as they prepare for another big transfer window under Ruben Amorim.
After a disappointing 2024/25 season, the Red Devils have shown clear signs of improvement, while Baleba’s performances for Brighton have declined in recent months.
United currently sit eighth in the Premier League table, having won three and drawn one of their last four matches. They were close to securing four straight wins at Nottingham Forest, leading 1–0 at halftime, before conceding twice early in the second half. Amad Diallo’s equaliser ensured they took a point home, extending their unbeaten run.
The team’s recent rise has been driven by their heavy summer investment, which saw Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, and Bryan Mbeumo arrive for a combined £200 million. Despite spending over £210 million on six new players, the club’s hierarchy is still ready to back Amorim in January as he continues shaping the squad in his image.
Reports suggest United have now been given the all-clear to move for Baleba, with negotiations underway between the two clubs. United were initially discouraged from pursuing the 21-year-old last summer after Brighton demanded £100 million. However, with the midfielder’s form dipping this season, the Seagulls are believed to be more open to letting him go.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reportedly willing to sanction a £90 million offer, signalling United’s serious intent to strengthen their midfield. Amorim views Baleba as a key target who can add power and control in the centre of the pitch.
Meanwhile, striker Benjamin Sesko still has work to do to win over fans and pundits. The Slovenian forward has scored just twice in 11 appearances and was recently benched for United’s win at Anfield. Former Newcastle manager Alan Pardew expressed doubts about him, suggesting the 21-year-old is still adapting to life in England.
Pardew noted that Sesko’s limited game time — due to United’s absence from European competitions — has slowed his progress. However, he also believes Amorim will use this period wisely to refine the squad’s balance, improve their midfield energy, and help the young striker find his rhythm.
United will look to continue their momentum when they face Tottenham Hotspur next, with both teams eager to find consistency in their domestic form.
