Following Rodri’s accusations, Pep Guardiola jokingly dismissed queries about officiating in Manchester City’s match against Chelsea.
City were obviously frustrated during the game by a series of rulings that did not go their way, and despite several VAR checks for penalties, none were awarded to the home team. Rodri protested after the game, stating, “I don’t want to talk about the referee, but I can’t remember a game with so many VAR checks and none for us, come on man.”
Guardiola was asked about those comments after the game, but the City manager wanted more specifics. “Which ones? “I don’t know,” he replied. “If you tell me about the precise decisions, I can tell you, but I’m not sure what you mean. We need to do better in the opening half.”
When asked about the late penalty shout that saw Ruben Dias go down in the area and Levi Colwill handle the ball as he attempted to clear it, Guardiola mischievously replied: “Which one? Which one? What about the one in the Chelsea box? “I did not see it.”
Despite his anger with the decisions, Rodri agreed with his boss that they needed to improve themselves. The midfielder insisted that his colleagues improve their defensive play and take responsibility.
“It was in our hands and we have to do better individual actions and you can’t let the game go this way,” that’s what he stated. “I’m not blaming anyone, but we must accept responsibility if we want to win the league.
“We had chances to win, and I felt the momentum, but it can be disappointing when the ball does not go in. I don’t want to comment about the referee, but I can’t recall a game with that many VAR checks and none for us, come on guy. You always see the referee’s face, which now reads’go on, move on’.”
