On Monday, Neal Maupay scored the first goal for Brentford against Manchester City in a difficult situation. However, the goal was not ruled out for a simple reason.

Last season, Man City lost twice to Brentford. In the first 14 minutes, they made Mark Flekken make three good saves, but it was their worst team that scored first.

In the 21st minute, Flekken sent a goal kick forward. It went right through the City defenders and Maupay put it past Ederson.

Both Maupay and Ivan Toney were called offside by Pep Guardiola’s team.

It is illegal for a player to be offside during a goal kick, so both Toney’s challenge for the ball with Ake (while not touching it) and Maupay’s run on to it were legal.

If Toney had touched the ball on its way to Maupay, Maupay would have been called offside because the ball would not have come straight to him from a goal kick.

City had more than 70% of the ball and 17 shots in the first half. Phil Foden finally beat Flekken by controlling a bad defensive header and putting the ball in the bottom corner.

After scoring against Tottenham and Nottingham Forest not long ago, Maupay has now scored in three straight league games.

Last week, the striker caused a stir when he copied James Maddison’s celebration after scoring the first goal against Tottenham.

Tottenham won 3-2, leaving the 27-year-old with a red face.
