Manchester City will remove two players from their Premier League team this month, now that the January transfer window has closed.
As we’ve come to expect from Pep Guardiola, January has been rather quiet in terms of new additions. City signed Claudio Echeverri from River Plate, but he will remain on loan at the Argentine club until the end of 2024.
Departures were always more possible this winter, and two major ones have been confirmed. First, after a difficult stint with the Blues, reserve goalie Zack Steffen signed a permanent contract with MLS team Colorado Rapids.
Steffen had been loaned to Middlesbrough last season after failing to impress the year before, while Ederson was not in the squad. The second exit occurred near the end of the window, when Kalvin Phillips left City on loan.
The former Leeds United player failed to break into the first team frequently enough, with Rodri easily Guardiola’s choice starting in defensive midfield. The Blues agreed to loan the England international to West Ham, but no agreement could be reached to make the move permanent in the summer.
Both of these decisions mean that City will be two players short when they submit their squad to the Premier League this month. According to MEN Sport’s estimations, 18 players will now be enrolled for the second half of the season, seven fewer than the authorised 25.
Players like Josko Gvardiol, Oscar Bobb, and Rico Lewis are not featured because they are U21 players. Here are our expectations for the City squad once their list is presented.
