Manchester United issued a statement in reaction to media reports about Marcus Rashford.
Rashford was reportedly spotted at nightclubs in Belfast on Wednesday and Thursday evenings before missing training on Friday owing to illness.
According to The Athletic, the 26-year-old went to Lavery’s Bar on Wednesday night and Thompson’s Garage nightclub the next day.
Erik ten Hag refused to go into depth before of Sunday’s match against League Two side Newport, saying only, “He reported ill.” Let’s say it’s an internal matter; I’ll handle it. “It is an internal matter.”
According to The Athletic, Rashford and his agent Dwaine Maynard met with football director John Murtough and Erik ten Hag at Carrington on Monday morning to discuss the events in Northern Ireland from the week before.
On Monday evening, Manchester United issued a statement regarding Rashford’s status, saying that he has returned to training and will be ready for selection against Wolves on Thursday.
“Marcus has taken responsibility for his actions,” the statement added. “This has been dealt with as an internal disciplinary matter, which is now closed.”
According to The Sun, Rashford will face a fine of two weeks’ pay, or ÂŁ650,000.
Many individuals have expressed their opinions on Rashford’s absence, including former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer, who advised the player not to waste his talent.
Speaking to BBC Sport during Erik ten Hag’s pre-match interview on Sunday, he stated: “If it’s an internal matter, you’d believe something is wrong.
“Marcus Rashford is an extremely talented player. We saw him penalised last season for being late to a pre-game meeting, but something is plainly amiss at home or in his connection with the football club.
“He can’t keep doing this, wasting his gift; it’s not right. He needs firm management, someone to get hold of him and warn him that if he continues to do this, he will have tremendous regrets at the end of his career.
“You can’t keep doing that; it needs to be fixed now. Last season, he scored 30 goals; this season, he has four. When I watch him play, it appears that he is carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, which needs to be addressed right now since he is incapable of dealing with it.
