Birthday cake regret usually comes from stuffing your face with too much of it out of greed. However, in Yaya Toure’s instance, it materialised when he was left wanting.
Two days earlier, Manchester City had won their second Premier League title. The blue side of Manchester had it all as they reclaimed control from their neighbours, Manchester United, once more. Then, a strange controversy surfaced two days later.
Everything began when Toure’s agent, Dimitri Seluk, asserted that City had failed to suitably celebrate the star player’s birthday, leading to hysterical rumours about a birthday cake going missing. Though it was a farcical scenario, it posed a significant threat to his stay at the Etihad.
When the team took off on a post-season trip to Abu Dhabi, Seluk was not impressed that Toure had received a cake and a song in addition to a happy birthday message from the club on Twitter. On his birthday, none of them gave him a handshake. That’s incredibly ill,” Seluk said to BBC Sport. “He received a cake, but on Roberto Carlos’ birthday, the Anzhi president presented him with a Bugatti.
“We merely asked that they shake Yaya’s hand and say, ‘We congratulate you.’ I don’t expect City to give him a Bugatti. When the squad gets together to celebrate his birthday, this is the very least they can do.
“It’s a joke, but I’ve heard in one publication that City congratulated him on Twitter. If they are not speaking to him, it is preferable that they stay off of Twitter. After the team won the Premier League this season, the owners of the club consumed a 100 kilogramme cake, but none of the players shook his hand on his birthday when they were all together. It implies they have no regard for him.
Yaya is obviously furious about this. You’ll say goodbye to the BBC and find another job if this were to happen to you as a journalist and no one shook your hand. It’s typical.”

When the allegations first surfaced, Toure tweeted, “Don’t take words that do not come from my mouth seriously.” Paulo Teixeira, Roberto Carlos’ agent, was not amused by the remarks. “I don’t see why this is coming out,” he stated to BBC World. It has nothing to do with the player’s contract. Toure is wealthy enough to purchase ten or twenty Bugattis. Egos are at issue here.
If Yaya’s agent makes this public, it’s likely because he knows what his client needs and is attempting to persuade the club’s management to take action on Yaya’s behalf. However, I’m not sure why they’re seeing this—it’s getting rather crazy.”
Toure later defended his agency, though, in a since-deleted tweet that said: “Everything Dimitri stated is accurate. He represents me. I’ll elaborate following the World Cup.
With four years left on his contract, Seluk hinted that Toure would leave City early as a result of the birthday snub. “There is a big possibility Yaya will leave this summer,” he stated.
“He is furious right now. His birthday incident indicates that the club has no interest in him. It served as evidence. Saying something like, “Oh we like him but we forgot,” is very acceptable. Forgotten? Concerning Yaya? The player who made the difference in your two Premier League championships? The one who assisted you in winning the League Cup and FA Cup?”

Toure stayed in Manchester despite having connections to both Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, and in September he made an effort to play down the controversy by saying, “My agent made a little joke about it and people took it seriously.” The way that people and the media responded to that surprised me a lot.
“There was a lot of conjecture about birthday cakes and other such things over the summer. I found it to be underwhelming. After four years in Manchester, I have never requested a birthday cake.”
Even though he didn’t play much for Pep Guardiola’s team, the Ivorian legend fulfilled his contract and finished his trophy-filled tenure at the Etihad by winning a third Premier League championship. Eighteen months after leaving, Toure talked about his regrets about the experience in an interview with The Times.
It’s absurd. It was the birthday cake that broke me. “You want cake?” is what people say when they meet me in France or Africa. I was really pissed off. I was saying to Seluk, “You shouldn’t do that; there’s no need.” “It’s not me, don’t worry,” I told Khaldoon [Al Mubarak] during our conversation.
“The terrible thing I did was to tweet, ‘Well, he [Seluk] is right.'” The one that’s killing me is that one. People began to accept his statements as true. I can understand why the fans were reading this and feeling horrible about me.
“Prior to the birthday dessert. Because I respect Seluk, I put up with his shenanigans. He has been a huge assistance to me, so you really have to give him credit as well. But he committed several wrongdoings. It was excessive.
