Premier League club is facing point deduction punishment for breaking financial rules

Wolverhampton Wanderers are ‘dangerously close’ to following in the footsteps of Everton.

According to a recent Football Insider story, the Midlands-based club may have violated Financial Fair Play (FFP) laws when their 2022-23 records are disclosed later this week.

Current FFP rules dictate that a club cannot lose more than £15 million in a rolling three-year period, and while that figure may be raised to £105 million with ownership investment packages, Wolves’ finances revealed a net loss of nearly £50 million last year.

The club then spent little over £150 million on acquisitions in the ensuing transfer windows, placing them deeply in debt.

As a result, Matheus Nunes was allowed to join Manchester City in a reported £53 million move last summer (Sky Sports).

Despite the club’s best efforts to balance the books, the Portuguese midfielder’s move to the Etihad came too late to be accounted for in the club’s 2022-23 accounts.

Any club found to have violated FFP restrictions following last month’s accounting deadline will be announced on Sunday 14th January, along with the accompanying fines.

After 20 games, Gary O’Neil’s squad is 11th in the Premier League table with 28 points, 13 clear of the relegation zone.
