Former Manchester United Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to become the new manager of European giants
According to a report, former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may return to work with Turkish giants Besiktas.
Solskjaer has remained unemployed since leaving United in November 2021, while he has been connected to a number of opportunities since his departure from Old Trafford.
The Norwegian has been linked with a move to Besiktas, who recently parted ways with manager Riza Calimbay.
According to NTV Spor, Besiktas has’started negotiations’ with Solskjaer to replace Calimbay, who left the club in fifth place in the Super Lig table.
Besiktas remains winless in domestic play this month, having lost to Alanyaspor and Fenerbahce while drawing with Ankaragucu. In the Europa Conference League, they were similarly beaten 5-0 at home by Club Brugge, but they won Lugano 2-0 on the penultimate day to finish third in their group.
In 2008, Solskjaer took over as manager of United’s Under-21 team before leaving to coach Molde in his native Norway three years later.
In 2014, he returned to the UK for an ill-fated and brief stint at Cardiff City before returning to Molde in 2015. After United fired Jose Mourinho in December 2018, Solskjaer was brought in as a caretaker on a less-common managerial loan. He was given the post permanently in March 2019 after turning their fortunes around.
During his time in charge of Manchester United, Solskjaer was complimented for his man management and big game record, but he was chastised for failing to end the club’s trophy drought. Despite signing Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane, and Jadon Sancho in the summer of 2021, the Red Devils failed to make an impact, and Solskjaer was fired early in the season.
Ralf Rangnick was appointed as United’s interim manager for the remainder of the 2021/22 season, and Solskjaer graciously provided him with an honest appraisal of the group. Erik ten Hag was then named permanent manager of the team in April 2022.
