Chelsea finished 2023 with style, taking all three points at Luton Town. Despite a late fightback from the Hatters, the Blues just about hung on for a 3-2 victory at Kenilworth Road, thanks to two goals from Cole Palmer and one from Noni Madueke.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side started brightly after making four changes from the squad that defeated Crystal Palace, some forced and others due to rotation. Palmer gave the Blues an early lead when Issa Kabore made a mistake, allowing the Chelsea player to score.

Palmer sent it home emphatically for his seventh Premier League goal of the season. Pochettino had never lost to a freshly promoted side in the English Premier League before this game, and that record did not appear to be in jeopardy.

Madueke then made it 2-0 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the half. The winger, who came into the team after scoring the game-winning goal against Crystal Palace the week before, looked dangerous all afternoon at Kenilworth Road.

After the defenders shifted him onto his so-called weaker foot, the 21-year-old hammered the ball into the roof of the Luton net with a ferocious right-footed drive. Madueke has finally made an impact in this Chelsea team after a tough period since joining from PSV Eindhoven in January.

But it wasn’t just his attacking abilities that shone through in a drenched Bedfordshire. Madueke was tracking back and defending quite effectively on the right side, which is not normally linked with his game.

Pochettino, on the other hand, informed his players that he wanted a fight against the Hatters, and he got it. Madueke exemplified this. He has certainly listened to Pochettino in recent weeks, and it appears that the Argentine has given him a man-management masterclass.

Palmer’s excellent goal in the second quarter sealed the victory for the visitors. Nicolas Jackson played an inch-perfect pass to Palmer, who circled the goalie, waited for the ideal moment, and then tapped the ball into the net.

There was a tremendous letdown in the away end, which effectively ended the game for Chelsea. Not only that, but they were able to celebrate alongside Palmer and his Blues colleagues.

Rather predictably, Ross Barkley scored late for the hosts, and Elijah Adebayo added another not long after. Kenilworth Road in Chelsea was trembling. Despite this, Chelsea managed to hold on with the home crowd roaring.

There were some shaky moments in the defensive again, and Luton could smell blood. Thiago Silva made some vital blocks and clearances to help the game finish. But it was probably more nerve-racking than necessary.

Palmer was undoubtedly the show’s star, but Madueke deserves special recognition. The England Under-21 international has provided a new dimension to Chelsea’s attack at an important moment. These opportunities must continue to be provided to him.

However, it might be terrible news for Raheem Sterling, who started the game on the bench after serving a one-match suspension. Despite a solid start to the season, Sterling irritated fans on Christmas Eve when he failed to pass the ball across goal when one-on-one with Wolves keeper Jose Sa.

Sterling didn’t even make it to Kenilworth Road. He sat on the bench as Chelsea’s offensive prospered at times.

This is not to say Sterling does not have a role at Chelsea. Between now and the end of the season, the English winger will play a significant role in the team. However, the emergence of young players like Madueke and Mykhailo Mudryk, not to mention Palmer’s brilliance, may not be the best news for Sterling.
