Congratulate West Ham and thank my guys for their efforts. That is all I can say. This is the game of football. When you consider how much we generated in the game, the outcome is quite disappointing. However, they outperformed us in both categories. They had two shots, one of which was a penalty three. We had 30, I’m not sure how many touches in the box, how many situations, how many chances to score, and we didn’t take them. If you want to win in football, you must improve in this area. We didn’t win today as a result of that.
Is the forwards’ inability to capitalise on opportunities a problem?
That’s all there is to it. We must attempt to generate. If we don’t score after 30 shots, we’ll have to take 50 or 60. That’s all there is to it. I can’t fathom a game against a genuinely good West Ham side where we have more touches in the box, more dominance, and fewer opportunities for the opponent. But that wasn’t enough to win the game today.
Is this one of the most frustrating nights you’ve ever had as a manager?
It is. But this is football. Normally, when a team generates so much energy, it wins games. That is how we have done it. We created a lot of chances against Brighton and Liverpool, but we scored in different ways. We need to take another step in that direction if we want to win games more comfortably, and the team deserves to win today. There is no doubt about that.
What did you think of the VAR decision for the opening goal?
I’ve never seen it. They claim it is inconclusive. It’s unfortunate that with the technology we have, it’s not always clear whether it’s out or in. It’s finished. It’s no longer there. We can’t do anything about that right now.
Can you fix the problem with chances internally?
All we have are the players we have, the players I most admire. What we need to do is strive to find better scenarios, more training, and boost our confidence. They’ve completed the task.
Are they lacking in self-assurance?
I don’t believe it’s that. You hit the ball and it’s a half-centimetre away. You have a certain number of shots, but one of them is blocked and does not go in. In these scenarios, we must choose the correct pass; there are two players free in the box, and I can recollect five or six actions. That is what separates the winners from the losers.
Is it your opinion that there weren’t enough camera angles for the opening goal?
I’m not sure. If the technology we have now is insufficient to provide us with that answer, we must win the game without it. That should have been more than plenty given the number of circumstances we generated in the game.
Do you believe you need to do something about the conversion because there were 77 touches in the box?
They were fantastic. We need to put the ball in the net and win the game. We didn’t defend the box well enough in the two occasions where we had to. They are a side that is very good in the box because of their timing and the quality of their front players. That was the deciding factor today. We had a really disappointing night because I believe we should have gotten more out of the game.
