Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has come and and state the reason why Enzo Fernandez was not played yesterday.

Recently, Fernandez hasn’t been at his best, and he’s been getting a lot of attention. Former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan even said that he wasn’t worth the money that Chelsea paid for him.

Chelsea broke their record for the most expensive player they’ve ever bought when they paid £107 million to sign the Argentine earlier this year (BBC Sport).

Following Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Sheffield United at Stamford Bridge, Pochettino said that Moises Caicedo and Conor Gallagher would be better for the game than Fernandez.

The Blues manager said this about his choice to leave out the former Benfica player: “Only 11 can play.” There is a lot of competition, and sometimes you only need one trait. One character or another.

“I have to pick the player, and we saw that Caicedo, Gallagher, and Cole, who played as a No. 10, could be the best combination for today.”

Are you sure Enzo Fernandez will get his spot back?
You might think so. It seems like Pochettino just wanted to try something different for the game against Sheffield United. Also, Fernandez is not the type of player you leave on the bench very often. After all, Chelsea spent more than £100 million to sign him.

Again, the Argentinean player hasn’t been great this season, but he is still a very good player with a lot of skill.

Fernandez is a great passer. For example, he has completed 4.3 long balls per game this season, which is the second-highest rate for Chelsea’s team (WhoScored).

For £107 million, though, his enemies will likely want to see more. They will want him to score goals and set up others.
